MAKEBELIEVE RULES!

We fly this flag to remind us that for better or worse, imagination rules our world.

We fly it to stand up for our public libraries, advocating for intellectual freedom and open access to diverse information.

It also waves as a warning to those who misuse makebelieve in pursuit of power.

Declaration of Makebelieve

We, in the name and by the authority of King Monday, hereby declare this land to be the Land of Makebelieve!

The flag of Makebelieve stands as a beacon for imagination, symbolizing the reign of Makebelieve: our innate inclination to embrace stories and favor fictions over facts. We hoist it high, not just as a symbol, but as a reminder that imagination reaches far beyond the imaginary, acknowledging that it is Makebelieve which truly governs our reality.

Imagination is our most splendid treasure. It transforms life into an endless realm of possibilities. Yet, it bears the potential for misuse, especially in the hands of those seeking power. In recognition of this, our flag also waves as a warning against the miswielding of Makebelieve—to those who would manipulate our imaginations for their own gain, confusing, deceiving, and leading us astray. We declare our vigilance against such deceit. We will not fall for absurdities! We will hold our leaders accountable and demand that they adhere to the highest standards of truth.

our world will always be ruled by a little Makebelieve. we, the artists, have A sacred duty to ensure we weave only the finest threads of imagination into the fabric of this shared experience; and to defend our libraries—those bastions of wonder and knowledge that give fredom to our imaginations!

with every stroke of our brushes, let us try to paint an ever more beautiful picture for all us who dwell together in this wondrous Land of Makebelieve.

All hail, King Monday!

Street Art

PARTICIPATORY ART TAKES EVERYBODY:

This project is a monumental collaborative endeavor. By rallying under the Flag of Makebelieve you amplify our collective voice. Every new participant extends our reach and deepens our impact.

THE POWER OF IMAGINATION:

The lines between make-believe and truth are often blurred by the stories we tell and the visions we share. Through collective imagining, we craft shared realities wherein make-believe masquerades itself as common sense. This project invites us to question these blurred lines, challenging us to peer beyond the veil of accepted norms and daring us to envision a world beyond our current perceptions. Recognizing make-believe's deceptive influence empowers us to envision and create a more hopeful, imaginative future.

ADVOCATING FOR OUR PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM:

Libraries today face significant challenges, including censorship and attempts to restrict access to information. The American Library Association (ALA) reports that book challenges have surged, with attempts to censor materials reaching record highs. These challenges often target books on sensitive topics such as LGBTQIA+ issues, race, and other critical social matters. There are multi-faceted censorship attempts from organized groups, including direct challenges, legislative efforts, and social media pressure. These actions threaten the role of libraries as bastions of knowledge and freedom. It's crucial to highlight and combat these threats, ensuring that libraries remain strongholds of imagination, and spaces where all viewpoints are represented and accessible.

OUR ART, OUR VOICE!

In an era marked by rapid transformation and upheaval, where our societies are grappling with shifting paradigms and crumbling old orders, art speaks volumes. It's a testament to the power of collective imagination in sculpting realities and challenging the status quo.

The misuse of make-believe by leaders to create division, fear, and hatred underscores the potency of narratives. Misinformation and manipulated truths have paved the way for discord and violence. Yet, it's within our grasp to harness this power for good, to craft narratives that unite, heal, and inspire.

A FLAG OF HOPE:

Flying the Flag of Makebelieve is more than a symbolic act; it's a declaration of our collective power. It's a reminder of the transformative power of imagination in steering the human spirit towards hope, beauty, and joy. It's an act of defiance against narratives that seek to limit and divide us, urging us to hold the torch of truth higher. This project is a call to action, advocating for the protection and support of our public libraries as they face these significant challenges.

JOIN EVERYBODY AND BE PART OF THE VISION:

Post a King Monday sticker and Fly the flag on your front porch or from the digital flagpoles on the world wide web. You can download a copy of the King Monday Library Letter and engage your community in collaboration with your local library!

Together, let's fly the Flag of Makebelieve, reclaim the power of imagination, and sculpt a future brimming with compassion, understanding, and boundless creativity. By supporting our libraries, lets stand up for intellectual freedom, diversity of thought, and the right to access information.
